Learn how to use types of poses for your characters in Midjourney
One of the most awaited features from Midjourney (and any AI art tool for that matter) has arrived!
Midjourney’s new Character Reference feature is a major advancement for artists and storytellers seeking visual consistency. Similar to the platform’s existing Style Reference functionality, this update enables you to generate the same character across various images.
To maintain cohesive narratives and achieve precise styling objectives, simply reference a previously generated character image in your prompts. This streamlined process ensures seamless character design iterations. Ready to explore its potential? I’ll provide a quick-start guide and a few valuable tips to optimize your results, and we will learn how to make them pose depending on the image we want.
The following are the topics we are going to explore:
1. What is Character Reference?
2. How to use it with different poses
1. What is Character Reference?
One of the problems creators faced when using Midjourney for a large project like a short film, a graphic novel, or any type of story is character consistency. That means being able to use the same character over and over in different poses, locations, and costumes.
Midjourney solves this by introducing the parameter Character Reference, allowing us to create a character roughly based on the image(s) of an existing character provided via URLs.
To use it, just type --cref URL
after your prompt with a URL to an image of the character you want to replicate. You can use --cw
to modify the reference influence on your prompt on a range from 0–100
--cw 100
(default) uses the face, hair, and clothes--cw 0
focus just on the face
Always use the parameter — cw to improve your prompt results.
2. How to use it with different poses
Very well, let’s see how it works. Let’s start by casting our model:
Prompt: Medium Shot photography of a minimal modern fashion shoot with a young model, with slick black hair held in a tight ponytail above her head, in muted earthy colors, with creative editorial photography, extreme close-up portrait, against a pale background, professional makeup, wearing a black lace choker, black tank top — ar 3:4 — stylize 1000 — v 6.0
We have found our star.
The following is a brief list of the main types of poses used in Midjourney:
Catalog Pose
High-Fashion Pose
Dramatic Pose
Headshot and/or Profile Pose
Action Pose
Now, let’s test the poses, and see if Midjourney can keep up!
Catalog Pose
We’ll use our model for a catalog shot of a black sweater, including the URL in the link for the — cref parameter, and since we are changing clothing, using a — cw of 1.
Photography in catalog pose of young model, black sweater, creative editorial photography, white background, professional make up, — ar 3:4 — stylize 1000 — v 6.0 — cref https://s.mj.run/JUR_XrPZ9KI — cw 1
High Fashion Pose
Now let’s test with a Gucci shot.
Photography in High-Fashion Pose of young model, in the style of Gucci, creative editorial photography, studio lights, studio background, professional make up, — ar 3:4 — stylize 1000 — v 6.0 — cref https://s.mj.run/JUR_XrPZ9KI — cw 1
Try adding “full body shot” to your prompt, but review the results carefully.
Dramatic Pose
Now let’s try some Hollywood stuff.
