Midjourney Releases New ‘Model Personalization’ Feature
An experimental way to add your style to your images
Midjourney has introduced an experimental feature called ‘model personalization’ that allows users to fine-tune the Midjourney algorithm to their own personal tastes, significantly reducing the inherent “bias” derived from its training data.
How Does It Work?
When you write a prompt in Midjourney, many aspects remain unspoken.
Sometimes you don’t mention how are the lights; or the color of the hair and eyes; or some elements in the background.
That’s where Midjourney (or any other AI Tool, for that matter) steps in. The algorithms would fill in these blanks with their preferences, trained by the whole community of users, which can introduce certain biases.
With model personalization, the algorithm learns your unique tastes, making it more likely to reflect your preferences in the generated images.
Awesome, right?
So, how do we use it?
Currently, model personalization is driven by your interactions:
Pair Ranking Votes: You can vote on pairs of images, indicating your preferences.
Likes on Explore Page: The algorithm also learns from the images you like on the Explore page.
To activate this feature, you need approximately 200 pair rankings or likes. You can check your progress by typing /info
or visiting the 'tasks' section on the alpha site. Once you've reached the required number of ratings, you can enable personalization by adding --p
after your prompt.
Writing the prompt with Model Personalization
Enabling model personalization is simple:
Check Your Ratings: Ensure you have about 200 ratings by typing
/info
or checking the 'tasks' section.Activate Personalization: Type
--p
after your prompt. Send it.Get Your Code: When you generate a prompt with enabled personalization, your unique code will be added after your prompts. You can reuse or share this code to apply your personalization effect.
Controlling Personalization Strength
You can adjust the strength of the personalization effect using the stylize parameter:
--s 0
turns off personalization.--s 100
is the default setting.--s 1000
is the maximum strength.
For example, to create a highly personalized image of a woman, based on your style, you could use:
Style photo of a woman --p [your code] --s 1000
Let’s use one of my favorite prompts:
Fashion editorial, photography of cool and futuristic style art, in the style of Onii Kei, focus stacking, bright colors, hyper-realistic details, mechcore, realistic hyper-detailed portraits, organic shapes, sci-fi urban background, depth of field — ar 3:4 — stylize 1000 — v 6.0
I have rated around 300–400 images. Based on that, Midjourney knows I like bold colors and strange shapes. And it delivers.
What about your code?
Important Notes
Feature Stability: Personalization is not yet a stable feature. Midjourney may implement algorithm updates over the coming weeks. Consider it a ‘fun feature constantly in flux’.
Natural Evolution: Your style will evolve as you continue to provide pair ratings, and liking images.
Summary
Model personalization is a powerful new tool that allows users to infuse their unique tastes into MJ’s image generation process, creating a more personalized and bias-free experience. By interacting with pair rankings and likes, you can teach the algorithm to better align with your preferences, enhancing the creative potential of your prompts.
